Purple Sweet Potato Chips

How is it the last Friday of winter break already?!?  It went by so quickly, but then again, it always does.  The holidays were wonderful and the time off of work was restful and rejuvenating.  

Friday’s Five

1.  It seems like everyone is looking to make a dietary change for the new year, but I think it can be a bit overwhelming or discouraging to try a strict plan filled with items you “can’t eat”.  Instead, consider this:  try to ADD one healthy food item to your daily intake.

That’s it.  It’s sometimes referred to as “crowding-out”, where you look to add foods that are nutrient dense into your diet.  The impact will be less room for the less-healthy items.  And small changes can make a big difference in the long run.

Make a green smoothie.  Try something fun and new from the produce department (how about Cucuzza squash, Jersey white sweet potato, yuca, or Buddha’s Hand?).  Bake fries made out of squash.  :)

2.  Speaking of new produce, my latest find at the grocery store this week was DEFINITELY a winner.

I’ve seen purple potatoes before, but not purple SWEET potatoes.  I was thrilled!

Being the supportive wife that I am, I made chips (here’s how) to help appropriately fuel my husband as he cheered for the Vikings.  I’m guessing I’ll be making another batch tomorrow.

3.  Warm salads are where it’s at lately!  Atop a bed of greens and a few raw veggies, I toss roasted veggies (like purple sweet potatoes!) and warmed protein (leftover chicken, beans, whatever I find in the fridge).

4.  While breaking a sweat on the arc-trainer (similar to an elliptical machine) at the gym the other day, I came across this idea in a magazine.

Looks delicious, and I love the healthier twist on the recipe.

5.  Spending time at home over break has allowed me to catch up on some great music–all sorts of genres and artists.  Bob and I have had tunes playing in the background quite frequently, and we’ve both commented on how enjoyable it is.  I’ve missed having the presence of great music on a daily basis!  Something to think about:

    Absolutely love purple sweet potatoes. I actually tried these before yams when I was like 13.

    Totally agree about adding healthy foods instead of taking things out of your diet. I saw this tip somewhere- whenever you have some pizza have a salad as well. So you’ll feel full by the time you get to the pizza and end up having less of it. Therefore, instead taking pizza out of your diet you simply lower the amount of it by adding in some salad :)

    I need to find purple sweet potatoes. I have not seen them but I will be searching for them. I love sweet potatoes. Thanks for posting about them.

    My goals is to go back to “snacks from the box/processed” choices for a food plan. More water and veggies. I just need to focus on good eat.

    Purple sweet potatoes look so cool….I’m going to be on the lookout! After seeing your salad, I’m really craving kabocha squash now. It’s been awhile since I’ve came across any. Definitely going to give those eggs a try. My kids love deviled eggs….I wonder if they would go for those. Totally agree with you on the music! Have a wonderful weekend!

    You come across the coolest new foods! Purple sweet potatoes? I haven’t seen those before, but now I want one! I also love the idea of ADDING good foods rather than making rules. Because then you can still have those treats, comfort favorites, etc., but on the whole, you’ll get more new, real, whole foods. Plus who doesn’t love experimenting with new recipes and new ingredients?? Okay, a lot of people, but hey, we can’t all be foodies 😉

    Yum! Purple sweet potatoes look amazing! I’m going to have to search for those this weekend! I agree, music is so therapeutic. I’ve been making more of a goal to have it on as background noise more often. Usually the Love Nugget and I just play in silence (since I don’t have the T.V. on) and he loves music I just always forget.

    I remember buying a sweet potato at the farmer’s market in Hawaii and being shocked and a little horrified when I sliced into it and it was purple! It’s great when you are expecting it, but it took me a while to work up the courage to actually eat it. And now that I want one, I can’t find them anywhere!

    I’m finishing my regular sweet potatoes right now (in the slowcooker venison stew currently….um….stewing) and after they are gone, I’m buying those Jersey whites. I wonder if they will still make me turn orange? I’m finally back to normal after my winter squash hiatus.

    Kevin is a vikings fan!! But I don’t think he’d be crazy about purple potatoes. I like the idea of adding something positive — I need to get back into the vegetables. I’ve been eating okay, but too low on the vegetables & protein!

    I love that music quote…so true. I always find myself thinking, “If only I could put [fill in the blank] into words the way that this song expresses [it].”

    YUM to purple sweets! I think I have only had them once, but they are always around at the Asian market. Something I have not had as much experience with is Yuca, but I remember enjoying it on the one or two occasions I ate it…I will have to peek around for it at the store again. :)

    sooooo you live in Chicago and your hubs is a Vikings fan? Rough. This could happen to me someday. Mark’s a Vikings fan. I’m a Bears fan. It’s a tough season every year for us. :)

    I’m not a fan of these dietary changes to “eat clean” or “whole foods” – why can’t we just enjoy our foods and practice moderation 😉
